The Legal Ombudsman is an independent body that deals with complaints about lawyers and legal service providers in England and Wales.
When to Contact the Legal Ombudsman
You can contact the Legal Ombudsman if:
- You have already complained to us using our complaints procedure
- You are not satisfied with our response
- 8 weeks have passed since you made your complaint to us

Time Limits
Important: There are strict time limits for making a complaint to the Legal Ombudsman:
- Within one year of the act or omission about which you are complaining
- Within one year of when you should reasonably have known there was cause for complaint
- Within six months of receiving our final response to your complaint
What the Legal Ombudsman Can Do
If the Legal Ombudsman finds that our service was poor, they may order us to:
- Apologise
- Provide information or an explanation
- Put things right (if possible)
- Return documents or other property
- Refund or reduce fees
- Pay compensation (up to £50,000)

If you are concerned about our behaviour – for example, if you think we have been dishonest, treated you unfairly because of your age, disability or other characteristic, or have not handled your money properly – you can report this to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
